These cherries are grown in the Huon Valley and are from an orchard that was planted in the 1950s by the Wolf brothers and somehow survived when all the others were ripped out. They are a sour cherry, closely related to the more common morel variety but not nearly as dark and less fleshy. They originate in eastern Europe but became popular in England. They are preserved for us by Alison Hookey in a lightly spiced, sweet vinegar. Their colour is wonderfully ruby red and these little beauties are beautiful with strong cheeses or as an accompaniment to pork or game.
